Over 200 staff and volunteers of the Sierra Leone Airport Authority who have been recently sacked are demanding for their severance packages. The staff were given letters of termination over two months ago to give way to the new Turkish SUMMA company that will be running the airport for the next 25 years.
The employees say since they receive the termination letters, they have not been told when their severance packages will be paid. They are now calling on civil society, the media, and opposition politicians to help them put pressure on the authorities to act. Hon. Abdul Kargbo of the main opposition APC who covers the airport constituency said “Refusing to pay the workers their terminal benefits contravenes our labor laws. Our ministers of Transport and Aviation should act fast and solve this issue”, he posted on twitter. The two ministers have not yet responded to the workers demands.
