Sierra Leone’s main opposition APC party has elected Dr. Samura Kamara as their flagbearer for the June 2023 election. Dr. Kamara pulled a huge victory against all contesting candidates at the party’s national delegates conference in Makeni.
He won a landslide victory against all other contestants at the well-attended convention. This gives Dr. Kamara the right to contest against incumbent president Julius Maada Bio in the coming June 2023 election.
Dr. Samura Kamara, the former Finance, Foreign Affairs Minister, and Bank Governor previously contested against Julius Maada Bio in 2018. He lost to Bio by 48 to 51 percent.
His party believes he still has a chance to beat the incumbent Bio and give them a victory.
Dr. Samura Kamara has a bachelor’s degree in economics and a PhD in development economics. He has worked at the IMF, World Bank, and other international development agencies.
Earlier former president Ernest Bai Koroma called for peace and unity in their party and urged the members to be ready to accept the new transition, as old party leaders give way to new young ones. He said victory is certain for their party in the coming election if they work together at a team.
This clearly sets the stage for another contest between President Julius Maada Bio and Dr. Samura Kamara for the presidency of Sierra Leone. Bio in 2018 promised to transform the Sierra Leone economy with jobs and address the bread and butter issues. But many believed he has not done that in the past five years.
